DESCRIPTION
Salvia involucrata ‘Pink Icicles’ is a very attractive winter flowering shrub.Flowers: are tubular, a pale pink colour with a small furry hood and a bottom lobe which is curled back and beneath. There is a small white beeline at the throat to attract bees and insects, but the major pollinators of these long flowers are small honeyeaters with long beaks. Flowering begins in autumn, continuing through winter into spring. Here’s the history of Pink Icicles. Back in the early nineties when Wanda Trevor was selling cottage garden flowers at the local markets. One of her best customers for Salvias was a lovely lady called Marie Oldfield. She lived at Bunya and used to open her garden in Australia’s Open Garden Scheme. They became great friends. One day she said to Wanda “Wanda, I have a Salvia growing at home that you don’t have” At that stage, being young and cocky Wanda said to Marie, “Bring me in a flower and I will tell you what it is. The next Sunday Wanda's legs nearly went from under me when she saw this massive branch of Pink Icicles weaving its way towards her through the markets. It had grown as a naturally occurring sport on the side of her Salvia involucrata. It’s so humbling to know that every plant of Pink Icicles in the world originated from that one branch. Nature is amazing. We all hope everyone will remember Marie and her beautiful Salvia.
